Who we are

The Centre for Constructional Design (ZKE) is one of the two focal points at the Department of Architecture, Design and Civil Engineering. Together with the Centre for Urban Landscape (ZUL), this is where the department's research, post graduate education and internal services come together. We are also responsible for teaching the masters courses.

The ZKE is a centre of excellence for the 'art of building today'. We propagate an update to the classic notion of 'Baukunst' which shows its unbowed relevance today: Artistic, cultural, technical and economic issues must be considered holistically. Our pretence is that architects are generalists. They are designers and coordinators whose work consists of developing architectural propositions within the current legal and technical framework together with a team of specialists.

The ZKE team is an interdisciplinary group of architects and civil engineers, lecturers and scientific staff. It is supported by external speakers and we maintain excellent contacts with other professionals, institutions and business partners.

Together with the FRP one of the main fields of research at the ZKE is fiber reinforced plastic. Our curriculum incorporates integrative methods of ‚Synchronous Design’, which uses construction as an impulse in the design process and reflects our appreciation of integrative architecture.
